PLS-ZK-06 Optically stimulated luminescence irradiation detector
Product Description:
The PLS-ZK-06 Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) irradiation detector is a portable food screening system used for rapid detection or screening of whether food or its components have been irradiated. It can detect herbs, spices and seasonings, fruits and vegetables (including dehydrated vegetables), and products containing shells or bone fragments, such as crustaceans and meat. It is the recommended instrument in the current EU standard method for detecting irradiated food (EN13751-2002) (Note: EU standard EN13751 has now been accepted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as a global standard for detecting irradiated food), and it is also the primary instrument used by many European and American countries, as well as Japan, to test the irradiation level of imported food (i.e., determining whether food has been irradiated by measuring the PSL signal intensity).
The PLS-ZK-06 Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) irradiation detector consists of a pulsed excitation source, a sample chamber, a detection probe, a patented photon counting system (UK Patent No. 2291707), and a control unit. It is very easy to operate, suitable for both laboratory use and portable field measurements. Using the accompanying software, it can also be connected to a computer for data acquisition and processing.
The patented photon counting technology significantly improves detection sensitivity, enabling direct sample detection without tedious and time-consuming pretreatment. This system is particularly suitable for detecting herbs, spices, and seasonings, and can also be used for fruits and vegetables, as well as products containing shells or bone fragments, such as crustaceans and meats. In fact, the system is applicable to a wider range of foods.
During measurement, simply place the sample in a covered petri dish and then insert it into the sample chamber. No sample preparation is required for direct measurement. The non-contact measurement process makes it very convenient to detect different types of food without worrying about cross-contamination. Screening detection takes only 15 seconds; the test results are indicated by corresponding indicator lights. For irradiated herbs and spices, the single-pass detection accuracy is over 95%.
The instrument offers two operating modes:
Computer-connected operation—When connected to a computer, measurement parameters (such as measurement time, threshold standards, and data recording conditions) can be customized via software. This allows for obtaining specific photon counts for the sample, measuring dark counts (photon count rate in the sample chamber without light stimulation), empty chamber counts (count rate without a sample to determine sample chamber contamination), and photomultiplier tube sensitivity testing, among other things. It can also perform PSL calibration measurements for samples with uncertain screening results.
Compared to other methods for detecting irradiated food, this method has several significant advantages:
- No sample pretreatment required—Most samples can be measured simply by placing them in a petri dish. Thermoluminescence (TL) methods require complex sample pretreatment, often taking several days, thus the measurement cycle for a single sample typically exceeds one week.
- Simple operation—Results are available in just 15-60 seconds after pressing a button.
- High accuracy – For example, the accuracy rate for a single test of irradiated herbs and spices exceeds 95%.
- Wide applicability – It can detect the vast majority of food products, making it the most widely applicable method among all irradiated food testing methods.
- Clean and environmentally friendly – No chemical reagents are required. Methods such as thermoluminescence (TL) require many toxic and harmful chemical reagents.
- Cost-saving – Because no sample pretreatment is required, daily testing costs are very low.
- Portable – Convenient for on-site measurement or sharing between different laboratories.
